Calculator methodology and limitations

JippyVest is a beta educational tool for exploring simplified stock-investment scenarios. It is not a brokerage, investment adviser, tax professional, or provider of investment recommendations.

Market-data source

When you select Get price, JippyVest requests the latest available USD quote from Marketstack. Search suggestions are limited to U.S. common stocks and ETFs, and quotes reported in another currency are not displayed. Quotes can be delayed, unavailable, inaccurate, or different from the price at which an order could execute. During U.S. market hours, a quote may be cached for up to 15 minutes; outside those hours, it may remain cached until the next regular delayed-data window. Verify prices independently before making a decision.

Position inputs and calculations

In dollar mode, estimated shares equal the entered dollar amount divided by the purchase price. In shares mode, share cost equals the entered shares multiplied by purchase price. Entered buy commission is added to cost basis, while entered sell commission is deducted from gross proceeds.

Gross proceeds equal shares multiplied by future stock price. The stock position value is gross proceeds minus sell commission; after-fee stock profit or loss is that value minus cost basis. The displayed position value and profit or loss also add any estimated dividends. Return is the displayed profit or loss divided by cost basis. Break-even sell price equals cost basis plus sell commission, divided by shares; it does not include dividends or taxes.

Estimated dividends

The optional estimate multiplies shares by the annual dividend per share you enter and by the holding period in months divided by 12. It assumes that rate remains constant throughout the period. Actual payments can change or stop, and eligibility, payment dates, dividend taxes, and reinvestment are not modeled.

Estimated tax option

If you choose the optional estimated-tax setting and enter a rate, the calculator applies that rate only to a positive after-fee gain. It does not determine what you owe and does not account for filing status, income, deductions, credits, other gains or losses, holding period, state or local rules, or changes in tax law.

What the calculator does not model

The stock profit calculator does not model dividend reinvestment, stock splits, bid-ask spreads, order type, partial fills, market liquidity, margin interest, borrowing costs, currency effects, all broker fees, wash-sale rules, or individualized tax treatment. Results are hypothetical estimates and may differ materially from actual results.
